Last year, Lupe Fiasco claimed he was going to retire from music — but apparently he’s up to some non-rap hijinx, having allegedly “started up a mysterious post-punk outfit called Japanese Cartoon.”

Blogs are buzzing with the news that the bespectacled beatmaker has started up a mysterious post-punk outfit called Japanese Cartoon. Weirder still, they sound like a lo-fi cross between Killing Joke and DFA 1979.

Internet speculation is rife that Lupe is the faux-English accented lead singer, but in a blog entry on the band’s MySpace yesterday it was claimed that Lupe was merely a producer, and the vocals were in fact by an enigmatic figure called Percival Fats.

It’s understandable why Lupe may not want to lay claim to the band’s vocals. The cod-English accent on Japanese Cartoon’s tracks sounds more like Dick Van Dyke in Mary Poppins than Jaz Coleman. Plus, Lupe’s hip-hop fans have been giving the band a mixed response on internet forums.
