Reporter Tweets 3-Year-Old’s Funeral

This is truly a case of microblogging gone very wrong. What were you thinking Berny?

The only people more tragic than Web 2.0 pundits who demand newspaper reporters overshare their every move are the reporters who take their advice. Berny Morson from Denver’s Rocky Mountain News dragged the gravesite into the 21st century Wednesday by sending updates from the funeral of a three-year-old boy killed in a car crash that made headlines last week. I’m not saying Berny (is that M or F?) shouldn’t have done it — I’m saying Berny did it wrong. Rather than convey the human drama on location, Morson dryly noted each step in a ritual that readers could have guessed. Next time, why not let the next of kin do the typing? That seems easier.

Here’s the archive of his updates, if you weren’t already discouraged by this story:

For some bizarre reason, Rocky Mountain News thought it’d be productive to live blog the funeral today of Marten Kudlis, the 3-year old boy killed at an ice cream store last week.

So, the reporter hopped on Twitter and kept the Internet updated with step by step coverage of the boy’s funeral ceremony. Tragically, the boy was killed last Thursday when Francis Hernandez, an illegal immigrant, crashed into a Baskin Robbins store in Aurora where the boy was waiting to get ice cream. Depressing, almost as depressing as this reporter’s Twitter updates:

Seems like a normal funeral to me. Thanks for the update, Berny Morson. Not just for exposing the Internet to your stupidity and carelessness but also exploiting the family in their time of grief.
