Current TV, Wired, and Six Apart Slash Jobs
Although mainstream media across America are feeling the negative force of the current financial crisis, so too are their counterparts in the web 2.0 world of the digerati.
Several high-profile digital media companies — including Al Gore’s Current TV network, Wired Magazine, and blogging software maker SixApart — all announced substantial job cuts and corporate restructuring plans on Tuesday.
Current has cut at least 30 positions and offered this official statement:
Current Media today announced changes to its structure and staffing. Approximately 60 positions have been eliminated in the company’s three U.S. offices and approximately 30 new positions created. Many of those whose positions were eliminated have been placed in the new positions. Current will have approximately 410 employees (after these staffing adjustments). These changes result from the development of a new, innovative programming strategy built around eight cross-platform channels, including news, comedy, music and technology, slated to premiere in the first quarter of 2009. Current’s new programming strategy expands upon its pioneering use of viewer created content to include additional opportunities for participation, creating a far more viewer-influenced network, and further unifies the Company’s online and TV platforms by having each web channel paired with a companion TV show. In addition, these changes enable Current Media to reduce its cost structure, thereby assuring that it will be comfortably profitable in 2009 regardless the depth and length of the recession.
Wired has ditched more than 25% of their San Francisco newsroom:
A quarter of the 50-something employees in Wired.com’s San Francisco newsroom are gone, a source tells us — and with them, the bubbly delusion that Wired would not just report on the transformation of media by technology, but be a part of the revolution as well. The cuts hit Wired’s tech team heavily, though some writers and editors also got pink slips. (CNET reports that 3 out of 28 editorial staffers are gone, but a Wired insider says that the actual number of edit jobs cut is at least six.)
And Six Apart is laying off 8% of its workforce:
The company is laying off 8 percent of its 200-plus workforce, and shifting more resources into its services business. Cofounder Ben Trott is taking a bigger role running Six Apart’s blog-hosting business. Alden and other top managers are taking a 15 percent paycut. The only disappointment: That the company didn’t kill off Vox, its interminably boring free personal blogging service.
There’s simply no such thing as job security, at this point, even in the previously insulated online space of Silicon Valley’s internet giants.
To follow the fallout, check out Wired’s handy, if pessimistic, Tech Layoff Tracker.
Is anyone out there making money?

Jennifer Aniston Is Not Pregnant
Let the rumours continue: Jennifer Aniston is not pregnant with John Mayer’s baby.
Possibly.
People, it’s OK – there’s not going to be a baby with Jennifer Aniston and John Mayer’s blood running through it any more.
Not so long ago we were swamped with rumours that Jennifer Aniston, deafened by the epic clanging of her biological clock, had bit the bullet and let fop-haired manboy John Mayer shove a bun in her oven. But apparently that’s not the case.
And what is the brilliant scientific logic used to deduce this bit of celebrity baby news?
Because Jennifer Aniston recently went to a restaurant in quite a tight blouse – something that no pregnant woman has ever done. On top of that, people are now claiming that the pregnancy rumours were started deliberately to steal attention away from Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie.
So, Jen Aniston wore a tight shirt to a restaurant. And you know what that means. Not pregnant.
(Oh, how far we have fallen…)

Eleanor Rigby’s Signature to be Auctioned in UK
A document containing the signature of Eleanor Rigby, the inspiration for the Beatles’ classic, will be auctioned for charity in London on November 27th.
The document is expected to raise £500,000.
The paper, dated 30 November 1911, shows the pay received by scullery maid E Rigby from Liverpool’s City Hospital.
It surfaced in 1990 when Sir Paul McCartney sent it to Anne Mawson, of the Sunbeams Music Trust, when she asked him for £500,000 for the charity.
It will be auctioned at London’s Idea Generation Gallery on 27 November.
The signature is expected to fetch £500,000.

Peter Gabriel Launches ‘Free’ Music Service ‘We7′
Peter Gabriel launched We7 on Tuesday, a new ad-supported ‘free music’ service that allows fans to stream full songs and albums from the four remaining major labels as well as hundreds of independent labels.
Ad-supported services such as RCRDLBL have had some success in this field, but the last thing the online world needs is another music-driven social network.
I’ll be interested to see if fans flock to We7. Check out the site and let us know what you think.
A new music service that allows fans to listen to songs and albums in their entirety for free has been launched today.
Peter Gabriel co-founded the venture called We7 – a free advertising-funded music streaming service which will have music from four major labels and hundreds of indies available to listen to.
While fans get to listen to tracks in full for free before they buy, rights owners and artists will get paid by We7 from audio and digital advertising revenue.

Eminem Album ‘Relapse’ Pushed Back to 2009
Eminem had been hoping to release his new album ‘Relapse‘ in time for the holidays, but it’s looking like the record won’t hit the shelves until 2009, sometime in the “first quarter of next year”.
Eminem is unlikely to release his forthcoming new album, ‘Relapse’, before the end of 2008, claims an anonymous record company “insider”.
According to the New York Post despite UK and US retail websites listing the album as set for a December release, ‘Relapse’ is likely to be released early next year.
“Eminem… is completely obsessive-compulsive about this album,” the source is quoted as saying. “There’s a 50:50 chance it will be done by the end of this year but most likely it’ll be the first quarter of next year.”

Will Smith Remakes ‘The Karate Kid’, Minus Ralph Macchio
It’s time to “wax on, wax off” all over again, kids.
That’s right, The Karate Kid is being remade by Will Smith — minus the participation of the original Kid (Ralph Macchio) and the legendary Mr. Miyagi (Pat Morita).
Instead, the film will star Will Smith’s son Jaden Smith and will be set in Beijing instead of California.
At this point in Hollywood’s history, seemingly nothing is sacred. What’s next, a full franchise remake of the American Ninja series?
According to Variety, the father-son team is on hand to craft an updated version of the 1984 blockbuster ‘The Karate Kid.’ The duo shared the screen in ‘The Pursuit of Happyness.’ This time around 10-year-old Jaden will star, while his father will produce alongside original franchise developer James Lassiter.
The movie will be set and filmed in Beijing — unlike the original, which took place in California. The basic plot, however, will be the same: a bullied youth learns to stand up for himself with the help of an eccentric mentor.

Lupe Fiasco to Retire from Rap
After releasing only two albums, Chicago rapper Lupe Fiasco is claiming his forthcoming album, LupEND, may well be his last.
Fiasco has stated that he plans to retire from music. I wonder how long this one will last.
Just ask Jay-Z about rap “retirement”…
Lupe Fiasco could be the next hip-hop megastar to apparently retire from music.
Though this is not the first time the Chicago rapper – born Wasalu Muhammad Jaco – has talked about quitting, speculation has been renewed that he will leave the game after the release of his third album LupEND.
There is still no release date for his forthcoming final album, but the title as good as confirms what Fiasco told Billboard last December about his plans for retirement.
“LupEND – that’s going to be my last album’s title. When you play a video game, you can only put in three letters for your name and when the game’s over, those three letters and ‘END’ pop up. My next record might be my last one.”

The Gap Gets Flo Rida for ‘Street-Smart’ Rap Jingle Bells
This is a terrible idea. Holiday raps have no precedent for either quality or commercial success.
Doesn’t The Gap remember it’s failed attempt to rap with Missy?
A Christmas classic will get a Hip-Hop makeover, thanks to a new Gap campaign featuring rapper Flo Rida and R&B vocalists Trey Songz and Janelle Monae.
The international specialty retailer cited the appeal of Hip-Hop artists among brand marketers as motivation fro recruiting Songz and Flo Rida to write what it calls a “street-smart rendition” of “Jingle Bells” for its Merry Mix It campaign.
