‘Facebook to Buy Twitter’ Rumours Begin to Fly
We picked this one up from CNET and are simply passing it along.
So, don’t shoot the messenger. Or, in this case, the second messenger.
It’s certainly anyone’s guess what Yung Zuck & Co plan to do with the microblogosphere’s 140 character juggernaut.
John Battelle, CEO of Federated Media, decided to have a little bit of speculative fun onstage with Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg at the Web 2.0 Summit. It’s the sort of “speculative fun” that could give tech bloggers a gossip-overload headache for weeks to come: Battelle decided to throw some fuel on the “Facebook might buy Twitter” fire. Which, as far as I can tell, is a relatively new addition to the rumor-roasting pit.
“Is Twitter just a feature of Facebook?” Battelle prodded. Facebook, after all, has its own “status” feature that arguably competes with micro-blogging services like Twitter and FriendFeed.
Zuckerberg answered cryptically. “Oh, that’s tough.”
Battelle then asked if Facebook’s chief financial officer, Gideon Yu (yes, the one who’s reportedly hunting for V.C. dollars in Dubai right now, depending on who you ask) has a “build-or-buy spreadsheet” on the wall of his office, jokingly implying that the company could be weighing the option of acquiring Twitter to boost its own “update” service. There wouldn’t be a particularly logical way for the two to integrate, but what the heck? It’s juicy, unfounded gossip ripe for the mongering! And once these things start, they can get deliciously out of hand.
Zuckerberg laughed it off, and said he’s “really impressed by what they’ve done” at Twitter, and that it’s “a very elegant model.”

Prop 8 Vote Prompts Protests and Petitions
After Proposition 8 was passed on Tuesday, the reinstatement of California’s ban on same-sex marriage prompted widespread protests and outrage from those who had hoped to defeat the ban.
For ongoing coverage of this issue, please see NowPublic’s Proposition 8 Scan and featured coverage.
As many as 10,000 protesters encircled a Mormon Temple in Los Angeles on Thursday, as supporters of same-sex marriage continue to be outraged over the passage of Proposition 8.
An estimated 10,000 marchers descended on Westwood last hour to protest the passage of Proposition 8, leading to a bust of outrage large enough to encircle the Mormon Temple on Santa Monica Blvd. before overtaking the thoroughfare itself. Streaming live footage from KNBC features a mostly peaceful protest to date, with only minor incursions resulting in a driveway shout-down and a bit of get-the-homos-off-my-lawn resistance from cops nudging marchers off a sliver of LDS property. The crowd spilled onto Santa Monica around 3:15, shutting down westbound traffic en route to Westwood Blvd.
Huge protests overwhelmed police in Los Angeles, San Francisco, and Sacramento on Wednesday as thousands of same-sex marriage supporters took to the streets in defence of the cause.
Los Angeles Police Department officials say they are preparing for another major Proposition 8 protest in Westwood today at the landmark Los Angeles California Temple of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Westwood.
Department officials say they won’t be so caught off-guard again, as they were last night, when they were required to call a tactical alert after a few members of the mostly peaceful crowd got out of hand. The protest is scheduled to begin at 2 p.m. off Santa Monica Boulevard.
Students across California also staged rallies, vigils, and protests in response to the Proposition 8 decision.
While things got violent in Los Angeles and Sacramento when more than a thousand people gathered to protest the passage of Proposition 8, a gay marriage ban in California, students across the state also held their own rallies and vigils Wednesday, a day after the controversial ballot initiative passed.
More than 100 Stanford students—holding “No on 8″ signs converted to now read “I am a second-class citizen”—staged an impromptu rally around 1 p.m. yesterday, clogging an already congested intersection on campus and forcing traffic to come to a halt, the Stanford Daily reports.
Small protests were held at UC-Berkeley and Sacramento State, and Cal Poly students gathered with the San Luis Obispo community in a vigil over the new law. As one Sacramento State student put it, “I just watched it all shatter last night.”
And while students, protesters and police clash, online reaction is reaching a fever pitch.
A new online petition to ‘Re-open Proposition 8 for California‘ is being widely circulated on Twitter and has surpassed 122,000 signatures in less than 48 hours.
Civil rights groups have also jumped in to challenge the outcome of the Prop 8 vote in court.
Civil rights groups moved quickly today to challenge Proposition 8, asking the California Supreme Court to strike down the latest attempt to ban same-sex marriage across the state.
While refusing to concede that the ballot measure has passed, gay marriage supporters nevertheless filed a petition with the state’s high court in the event the current vote holds and Proposition 8 amends the California constitution to once again outlaw marriage for gay and lesbian couples.
San Francisco City Attorney Dennis Herrera also filed an identical legal challenge in the state Supreme Court, joined by Santa Clara County and the Los Angeles city attorney. San Francisco city officials, who pushed to overturn California’s gay marriage laws in the previous court fight, argue that Proposition 8 violates the equal protection rights of gay and lesbian couples.

Outraged bloggers are demanding that they be able to question those who voted ‘Yes’ on Prop 8 about their reasons for doing so.
It wasn’t just Christians who voted to ban gay marriage in California, but no doubt the measure would’ve failed without their support. Ditto to the Mormons.
There are so many questions I want to ask those people who voted in favor of Proposition 8 and as a result banned gay marriages in California:
- How is your marriage any more secure now that homosexual marriages in your state are broken?
- What do you say to the children of gay parents who question why their mommies or daddies can’t be married?
- Can I vote on the legality of your marriage?
Indeed, that final question seems to be ringing out the loudest in this debate: why should the majority be able to vote on the legal rights of a minority group?
As tensions flare over this highly divisive issue, many supporters of same-sex marriage have alleged that the Prop 8 ‘Yes’ vote was achieved, primarily, as a result of financial and political support from the Mormon church. Some have gone so far as to set up a website audaciously declaring “Mormons Stole Our Rights“.
Although no exact figures have been released, of the $74 million total spending on both sides of the initiative, the Mormon Church is confirmed to have spent at least $9 million in support of the ban — but church officials were quick to state that the ban “should not be portrayed as a ‘Mormon issue’ “.
The campaign manager for the group advocating passage of Proposition-8, which would ban gay marriage in California, says members of the Mormon church have donated about nine-million dollars so far to help pass the initiative. That’s about 40-percent of the total amount raised since July. Leaders of the church have encouraged members to do what they can to support Prop-8. While churches cannot take a stand on political candidates without affecting their tax status, they are allowed to address ballot issues. A spokesperson for the Mormon church in Sacramento told the “Sacramento Bee” the proposed ban on gay marriage should not be portrayed as a “Mormon issue.” Other religious groups have also contributed to support Prop-8. The Knights of Columbus, a Catholic fraternal organization, has donated more than one-million dollars.

Rahm Emanuel will be President Obama’s chief of staff in the White House.
Mr. Emanuel accepted the offer on Thursday.
Representative Rahm Emanuel on Thursday accepted the offer to become the White House chief of staff for President-elect Barack Obama.
Here is some background information on Emanuel’s recent political experience.

How President Obama Plans to Use Social Media
As NowPublic previously reported, “digital politics” and Social Media Mania, played a huge part in the US Election.
But how is the web-savvy President-Elect Obama planning to use social media during his presidency?
Mashable has assembled some excellent thoughts.
Hundreds if not thousands of observers have already noted the key role that the Internet and social media played in the successful campaign of Barack Obama. But when he’s President, how will he utilize the hundreds of thousands of MySpace friends, Facebook fans, Twitter followers, My.BarackObama.com members, and SMS opt-ins (just to name a few points of presence) to advance his policies and politics?
First off, Obama needs to decide that he wants to make social media tools a permanent part of his political strategy. This seems like a given – the tools he used (along with several new ones most likely) will certainly play a big part his 2012 re-election bid and that of whoever challenges him – but to-date, maintaining this massive social media program has been the role of volunteers and campaign staffers. MySpace and Facebook weren’t even a blip on the radar when Bush won re-election in 2004 – creating full-time positions within The White House to manage social media would be a first, but presumably, something we’ll soon see.
So far, Obama’s social media tools have been all about organizing campaigners and viral marketing. But now that he’s on his way to the presidency and no longer a campaigner, Tweets about upcoming rallies and embedding Obama speeches around the Web suddenly isn’t very useful. So how does he change the way he uses these tools once he’s in The White House?

MTV Europe Music Awards Rock Liverpool
The 2008 MTV Europe Music Awards were held Thursday evening in Liverpool.
Big stars like Beyonce and Kanye West were in attendance at this year’s EMAs, which included performances by Take That and The Wombats.
But everyone’s biggest thrill was surely the live rickroll amazingness of watching the ‘Best Act Ever’ award going to — yes, indeed — the legendary Rick Astley.
UPDATE | Nov. 7 -
The MTV Europe Awards took place at Liverpool’s Echo Arena last night. Katy Perry and Jared Leto hosted. Both also won awards. (Huh?) Britney Spears won a couple, too, though she didn’t attend. Tongue-and-cheekily, Rick Astley nabbed “Best Act Ever” via presenters Perry and Perez Hilton. (The end is near.) Pink, Tokio Hotel, and Kanye West were also winners. West (with Estelle), Killers (trippily, with feathers), Beyoncé, Kid Rock, and Paul McCartney all performed. The biggest presence was Barack Obama, even though he wasn’t there. Perry, who got “Best New Act,” wore an Obama shirt, as did Leto. Mr. 30 Seconds also reportedly led the crowd in a chant of “Congrats, Barack.” The only thing able to compete with all the Obamamania were the Beatles: McCartney was there because he received an “ultimate legend” award presented to him by Bono.
UPDATE | Nov. 6 — American acts have dominated the Awards thus far.
American acts dominated the MTV Europe music awards in Liverpool last night, with female singers Britney Spears, Pink and Katy Perry picking up gongs at an all-American themed ceremony at which President-elect Barack Obama received the loudest cheers.
Pink scooped the first gong of the night, winning the Most Addictive Track category with her song “So What”, inspired by her break up from husband Corey Hart. She was presented with her award by the three Sugababes, who took to the stage wearing red, white and blue.
Britney Spears continued her public recovery by beating the British singer Leona Lewis to the Best Album award for her most recent record Blackout, which she accepted via video link.
UPDATE: The stars have hit the red carpet…the gala has begun.
The biggest stars of the music world are walking the red carpet in Liverpool ahead of the MTV Europe Music Awards.
The Killers, Beyonce, The Ting Tings and Sugababes are among the artists at the Echo Arena for the ceremony, hosted by US pop star Katy Perry.
Coldplay, Duffy, Britney Spears and Leona Lewis lead the shortlist for the awards, with three nominations each.
Former Beatle and Liverpool native Sir Paul McCartney will also be honoured with the Ultimate Legend award.
PREVIOUSLY:
Preparations for the MTV Europe Music Awards 2008 are in full swing in Liverpool- where they take place this Thursday.

AND the A-list stars are now turning up in the city to gear up for their performances on the night.
Two of the UK acts playing on Thursday will be on stage this evening running through their moves.
Man band Take That will debut a track from their new album while Liverpudlians The Wombats will also play live.

Edward Norton’s Secret Obama Documentary
Did you know that actor Edward Norton’s production company has been making a documentary film about President-Elect Barack Obama’s rise to power — since 2006?
Well, now you know.
Long before President-elect Barack Obama had even made up his mind to run for the highest office in the land, Edward Norton and his Class 5 Films production company were already documenting the Senator’s life. The 39-year-old actor said that he became inspired by Obama’s 2004 speech at the National Democratic Convention and felt inspired to capture someone from his generation — and not his parent’s — inspiring so many and rising in leadership.
After being inspired by Obama’s historic DNC speech, the Norton began rolling their cameras in 2006.
Since 2006 — starting with Obama’s trip to Africa — Norton and his team have had the cameras rolling every step of the way. The whole project was kept fairly secret — since neither the campaign nor Norton wanted it to fuel any criticism of Obama’s ‘celebrity’.
As interest in Obama has skyrocketed, so too has interest in the documentary footage.
Back in August, it was reported that HBO was highly interested in snagging the rights to the footage. Their initial plans were to air the series within the first ‘100 days of the Obama Presidency’; provided he win. Mission accomplished.
So, keep an eye out for Norton’s ‘Obamamentary‘ — perhaps as early as spring 2009.

Michael J. Fox Jams with The Who
Michael J. Fox had a lifelong dream fulfilled when he was able to rock out with The Who on stage in New York on Wednesday.
“This is almost worth getting Parkinson’s for!” Michael J. Fox declared as he took the stage to play guitar with The Who in New York City Wednesday night.
The actor – who was diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease in 1991 – rocked out to the legendary band’s “Magic Bus,” trading licks and windmill guitar riffs with Pete Townshend.
The once-in-a-lifetime performance was the grand finale of Fox’s annual A Funny Thing Happened On The Way To Cure Parkinson’s.

Playboy’s Shares and Ad Revenue Drops
Who’s paying for Playboy these days?
Hugh Hefner’s once unmatched adult magazine and entertainment company has forecast a sharp decline in advertising revenue and share prices.
Adult entertainment company Playboy Enterprises Inc forecast a sharp decline in advertising revenue in the current quarter after posting a third-quarter loss, and its shares fell 27 percent.
Third-quarter revenue fell 15 percent to $70.4 million, partly because of Playboy’s decision to sell its television studio assets and to outsource its e-commerce operations. Analysts on average were expecting revenue of $75.5 million, according to Reuters Estimates.
“The market’s focusing on topline fundamentals, which were very poor in the quarter, and much worse than even the most pessimistic expectations,” said David Miller, an analyst at Caris & Co in Los Angeles.
So why the huge decline?
Oh right. Online porn.
Playboy lost $1.3 million in its publishing division as revenue fell 6 percent to $21.8 million. It also expects a 17 percent decline in ad revenue in the fourth quarter compared to last year.
Like many magazine and newspaper publishers, Playboy has a brand name that is more widely known than read. Circulation has fallen as more people looking for adult entertainment and racier pictures of nude women turn to free sites online.
