8 Million Downloads of Firefox 3…And Crashing?

without comments

Apparently 8 million copies of Firefox 3 were downloaded yesterday, but I guarantee that no more than 7,999,999 are satisfied customers. I was one of those pre-emptively enthusiastic technophiles to nab a copy as soon as the Mozilla servers had finished their early hours of continual crashing but, after Day 1 of use, I have to admit that I’m less than impressed. Although the browser speeds seems to have been marginally improved, I’m not sold on the look, feel, flavour, and flow of the design and user interface.

Have you downloaded it? What do you think of this Guiness record-breaking, ‘browser-to-end-all-browsers’?

Take this statistic with a grain of salt, but Mozilla said more than 8 million copies of Firefox 3 were downloaded in its first 24 hours online.

Mozilla, which is behind the open-source Web browser, was trying to set a download record for the software. The 24-hour period lasted from 11:16 a.m. PDT Tuesday to the same time Wednesday, and Mozilla said it’s waiting for the Guinness Book of World Records to review the results.

The download rate, which peaked at 14,000 per minute Tuesday, was still going strong at more than 6,000 per minute Wednesday morning.

MySpace Gets a Makeover, Do We Care?

with one comment

In Canada, at least, despite rampant pokes and zombie attacks, Facebook has become the de facto must-join social network. But for much of the (western) world, MySpace still retains a stranglehold on the tween to twenty set.

So that begs an inevitable question: is today’s MySpace redesign of interest to you? Do you care about their cosmetic upgrade?

It’s finally happened. Social networking juggernaut MySpace has released a fresh new look, complete with a massive advertising influence, about two-thirds of the home page. After all, social networking needs to make money one of these days, right?

Scroll down a bit and you’ll see the lead video of the day (” target=”_blank”hamster gets owned” when I visited), along with thumbnails of other popular videos of the day. The module also has tabs for music (with a MySpace featured artist of the day) and people (highlighting cool people of the day.) To the right is member login, “find a friend” and top music and videos of the day determined by most plays by users.

After login, you’ll notice the user page is also updated, with the most significant upgrade being the new navigation bar. Now you can jump to your inbox, check up on your friends, search for people, visit the apps gallery, edit your profile and hit the music site with one click.

Lil Wayne Sells a Million Albums in a Week, But How?

without comments

Lil Wayne has done the nearly impossible in 2008: he’s managed to sell more than a million albums in a week.

I’m as impressed as anyone. I can barely remember the last full album I purchased — it might have been all the way back in 2007. Well, tha illustrious Carter III, despite being leaked to fans in advance of the official release date, still managed to get fans down to their local iTunes shop to make a purchase.

So what’s Weezy’s secret?

Vulture breaks it down:

As some predicted it probably would, Lil Wayne’s Tha Carter III has sold more than a million copies in a single week (exact number: 1,005,545), the first album to do so since 50 Cent’s The Massacre in March 2005. Making this even more impressive are that Carter III leaked a week and a half before its street date, that Wayne’s fans — now used to just downloading free Internet mix tapes — haven’t been to a record store in years, and that worldwide music sales are the worst they’ve been in twenty years, according to the results of a new survey (we’re not sure why they had to conduct a survey to deduce this, but whatever). So how did Wayne manage to pull off this seemingly impossible feat?
